The gift of learning

Sometimes, the best thing you can give yourself is a new hobby

Food as art

Have you always wanted to make the perfect birthday cake for a loved one? Do you always end up with a lump of sugar and flour that barely resembles anything edible? Take a class! In this six-week beginning cake decorating series ($39) at Confectionately Yours, you will learn to make icing and how to ice and smooth a cake. You’ll also learn (believe it or not) how to make those impossible-looking roses and rose buds, and many other helpful hints and techniques. Hurry and sign up for the next class, which takes place on Sept. 15 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Confectionately Yours, 2855 Johnson Dr., Unit X, Ventura. Call 650-9592 or visit www.econfectionatelyyours.com.

Blogging as art

Forget the quaint little diary you kept as a child … the one with the lock and key. Blogging is the new diary and, to some, it’s an art. In Focus on the Masters’ new class, “Blogging as an Art Form: Creative Writing and the Personal Narrative” ($30) you will learn how to create an online journal and share your interests, thoughts and passions in an engaging style that will entice readers. If you can send e-mail, you can blog! Students can bring their own laptops to work on. The class takes place on Sept. 23, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Focus on the Masters, 1141 E. Main St., Ventura. Call 653-2501 or visit www.focusonthemasters.org.
